<p>A movable-window safety device (12) for arresting upward movement of a power-driven window glass in a motor vehicle body in the event of obstruction in the window opening comprises a resilient channel (16) for receiving the window glass (52) and which is mounted in a rigid window frame (8). The base of the resilient channel comprises an electrical detecting number (30) housed in a hollow chamber (32). The side walls (17 and 18) of the resilient channel (16) extend proud of the sides of the rigid window frame (8) and carry curved-over outer lips (38, 40) and inner lips (20, 22). An obstruction in the window opening is carried upwardly by the window glass (52) and applies a force (F) to one or other of the side walls (17, 18) of the resilient channel (16), according to whether the obstruction extends inwardly or outwardly of the window opening. The resultant force (F) is applied to the detecting member (30). The detecting member (30) may be part of a capacitor in the tuned circuit of an oscillator whose frequency correspondingly varies in response to the resultant movement of the detecting member (30) and is detected to arrest the window glass. Instead, it could be a member whose electrical resistance is changed by the applied force (F) and is detected by an appropriate detecting circuit to arrest the window glass.</p> |
