A process for the manufacture of artificial pearls which imitate cultivated ones includes taking as a base inorganic material (specifically excluding oyster and other mollusc shells), submitting the material to a mechanical treatment to give it an initial irregular configuration approximating to a spherical, spheroidal or fusiform body, said irregular configuration being accentuated by attacking the surface of the body with abrasive materials projected under pressure on to distinct points from projector elements by imposing movements on either or both the body and the projector elements, and covering the body with at least one coat of a nacreous and translucent material. Suitable base materials include glass, porcelain, crockery, chinaware, earthenware, marble, alabaster or any natural or synthetic stony material. The mechanical treatment may be moulding, melting, casting, pressing, turning, injection or cutting. Chemical action on the base may also be used. |
