PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal light valve in which the orientation of the liquid crystal is uniform and the rubbing streaks are hardly perceived. CONSTITUTION: In this light valve, each of its oriented layers has a two-layer structure obtained by forming as the first layer, an inorganic material layer 201 for providing each of the liquid crystal molecules with a restricting power so as to tilt itself by a specified angle from the perpendicular direction and as the second layer in contact with a liquid crystal 104, a polyimide layer for providing each of the liquid crystal molecules with another restricting power so as to orient the molecules themselves in the perpendicular direction. Therefore, since each of the liquid crystal molecules can be provided with a directional property by the inorganic material layer 201 beneath the polyimide layer 202 without rubbing the polyimide layer 202 in contact with the liquid crystal 104, the rubbing streaks are hardly perceived at the time of performing the enlarged projection of readout light. |
