METHOD FOR THE IDENTIFICATION AND CORRECTION OF LINE-CALL ERRORS IN TENNIS

A monitor system which combines manual and electronic operations is proposed as a method to identify and correct line-call errors which occur in the conventional line-call system used in the game of tennis. The monitor system enables several persons seated in various locations in the stands to act as line-call monitors by identifying obvious or gross line-call errors committed by line judges. The monitors communicate with the chair umpire by means of small hand held "call-box" transmitters each equipped with a push button which is pressed when the monitor detects a clear mistake by the line judge. The chair umpire wears a small radio receiver unit which accumulates the separate or simultaneous decisions of the monitors and generates a short "beep" sound in a speaker or an external earphone if certain simple criteria are met. The umpire can then make the appropriate overrule to correct the line-call error.
