PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image database unit in which mass image data of a program can be stored with a little installation space while suppressing the large scale and cost increase for a storage medium. SOLUTION: This image database unit has a registering means for registering a plurality of pieces of image data on a storage medium, monitoring devices 52 and 53 for monitoring the time elapse and read condition of the registered image data, a compression deciding device 54 for deciding whether or not to compress the registered image data on the basis of the monitoring results, a compressing device 61 for reading the image data decided to compress and subsequently compressing the image data, and a reregistering means for reregistering the compressed image data in the storage medium.
