PURPOSE:To achieve the speed-up of printing, by a method wherein the circuits control ling the speed of spacing of a printing head are provided and the printing in the case of shortening a character pitch by driving the printing head on the basis of the output of those circuits, is carried out. CONSTITUTION:When the printing is carried by a character pitch less than a basic character pitch, the signal of character pitch switching instruction is outputted from a control part 1 to a selection circuit 6 and a spacing speed control circuit 8. Thereby, the selection circuit 6 is switched so that the output from an OR circuit 5 is transferred to a printing part 7. Then, when printing data are respectively successively outputted from an odd line data fetch circuit 3 and an even line data fetch circuit 4 to the OR circuit 5, the printing data are logically summed with the OR circuit 5. Thereafter, it is sent to the selection circuit 6 and further, transferred to the printing part 7 with this selection circuit 6. Thus, the printing data of which the data line number is re duced to one half with the OR circuit 5 is transferred to the printing part 7. Then, a signal is outputted to a motor drive circuit 9 so that the printing part 7 carries out the operation of spacing for only the space part by the speed equal or superior to the printing speed at the basic character pitch, thus driving the space motor 10.
