PURPOSE:To obtain a reproduced image with high image quality by providing a D/A converter converting digital multi-value image data into an analog signal, a comparator, an image area decision circuit, a CPU functioning as a means for setting a period of a reference waveform, a counter and a J-K flip-flop. CONSTITUTION:In receiving digital multi-value data, the image area decision circuit 2 decision circuit 2 decides the kinds of images in each block, the data is converted into an analog video signal by a D/A converter 203 and the signal is inputted to one input of a comparator 205. A CPU 3 changes a preset value of a counter 4. The output of the counter 4 is a screen clock, which is converted into a triangle wave by a buffer 209, an integration circuit 210 and a bias circuit 212. When the kind of the image is decided to emphasize the resolution of a character by the image area decision circuit 2, the CPU 3 sets a smaller preset value to the counter 4 to decrease the period of the output signal 7 of the counter 4.
