PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spin valve thin film element improved in the output characteristics and in the stability of a reproduced waveform and in the controlled magneto-striction, in response to the narrow track trend. SOLUTION: This element comprises a anti-ferromagnetic layer 11 on a substrate 10, a fixed magnetic layer 12 formed in contact with the anti- ferromagnetic layer 11 to fix the magnetization direction, a free magnetic layer 14 formed on the fixed magnetic layer 12 through a non-magnetic electrically conductive layer 13 and orientated to the magnetization direction intersected the magnetization direction of the fixed magnetic layer 12, a hard bias layer 17 to orientate the magnetization direction of the free magnetic layer 14, and a pair of electrode layers 18 to supply the detecting current to the vicinity of the fixed magnetic layer, and the non-magnetic electrically conductive layer 13 and the free magnetic layer 14. The dimension Tw in the magnetic reproducing track width direction is set at 0.4μm or less, and the magneto-strictionλs is set within the range of -7.0×10-6<=λs<=2.0×10-5.
