The invention provides a process of shot-peening the intergranular oxidation layer formed on a metal surface which has been subjected to carburizing and quenching or to carbo-nitriding and quenching, which process brings about such peening effect as to shave off the intergranular oxidation layer not completely but with part of the layer leaved on the metal surface. In the process, shots having particle diameters exceeding 0.2mm and up to 1.0mm and hardness equivalent to or higher than that of the metal and a projector for projecting the shots are used and the shots are projected against the metal surface to be treated at a coverage of 100 to 500%, which is attained by employing a shot-projecting speed of 30 to 100m/s or a shot-projecting pressure of 0.1 to 0.5MPa, whereby the intergranular oxidation layer is shaved off with part of the layer leaved on the surface.
|
