A 1-6C prim. alcohol (I), esp. methanol, is reacted with a 4-10C tert. alcohol (II), esp. t.butanol, to produce an alkyl tert. alkyl ether, esp. methyl tert. butyl ether (MTBE). The process is improved by (a) using as catalyst a chlorohydrol-treated, phosphated acidic montmorillonite clay, and (b) continuously contacting (I) and (II) in amt. 0.1-10 moles (I) per mole (II) at 20-250 deg.C, atmos. pressure to 1000 psig. to obtain the either. Pref.,the clay is of formula Mx/nn+.yH2O(Al4-yMgx)Si8)O20(OH)4. M = intermeller balancing cation, normally Na or Li; x, y, n = integers. |
