PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an alcohol in high yield through suppressing byproduct formation by hydrating the corresponding olefin under specified conditions. SOLUTION: This alcohol is obtained by hydrating the corresponding olefin (about 2-30C cyclic olefin) in the presence of a solid acid catalyst (e.g. zeolite) and a cyclohexanecarboxylic acid bearing at least one susbstituent on either 1-,2- or 6-site (e.g. 2-methylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid). For the hydration reaction, within such range that the catalyst is present in the aqueous or oily phase or the mixed phase thereof, the amount of the cyclohexanecarboxylic acid compound to be used is 0.00001-20mol per mol of the olefin, the weight ratio of the catalyst to olefin is 0.001-200, and the molar ratio of the water to olefin is 0.1-100. The hydration reaction is carried out at 50-250 deg.C under a pressure of 0.1-2Mpa for 0.1-10h. Because esterification between the carboxylic acid as a reaction additive and the product alcohol is hard to occur, the objective alcohol can be isolated and purified from the reaction liquor in a high recovery ratio. |
