A photographic material comprises a support bearing a hardened light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer, the emulsion layer, an antiabrasion layer or an interlayer containing a synthetic surface active agent having an acid group and a substituted amino group, and the emulsion layer or a layer between it and the support containing water-insoluble solid inert particles having an average diameter between 7 and 15 microns, no more than 5% of the particles by weight having a diameter above 20 microns. Surface-active agents specified have the formulae:- wherein R and R 1 are aliphatic hydrogen radicals, R 2 is aliphatic hydrocarbon, phenyl or cycloalkyl R 3 is hydrocarbon, x is 1 or 2 and M is a cation. The inert particles may be of barium or calcium sulphate or carbonate, oxides of zinc, titanium, aluminium or magnesium, silica, glass, insoluble starch, cellulose esters or ethers, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, polyvinyl acetate, polycarbonates, styrene polymers and copolymers, and hardened gelatine. The layers are hardened for example by formaldehyde and may also contain alkane diols and salts of maleopimaric acid. The emulsion layer may also contain quaternary ammonium, quaternary phosphonium and/or ternary sulphonium salts in addition to other additives. The materials are particularly suitable for rapid processing.
