A system for checking merchandise items each carrying a coded item-identifying label includes movable support means (29) having an upper surface (55) which supports an item to be identified and which is coplanar with the fixed support surface (18) of a check-out counter (20). An optical scanning device (24) is arranged to scan the label of an item positioned on the movable support means (29) and to generate first data signals identifying the item, the scanning light beams passing through a light transmissive portion (39, 46) of the movable support means (29). The movable support means (29) is arranged to be moved downwards in response to the positioning of a merchandise item thereon, and signal generating means which engage the movable support means (29) generate second data signals representing the weight of such item. The first and second data signals are applied to a data terminal which generates third data signals representing the price of the identified item.
