Process and apparatus for recognising bottles on their side or damaged bottles in a bottle stream, in which the individual bottles are transported in a closely packed formation, the bottle stream being monitored for uniformity and, when a non-uniformity is recognised, a signal capable of being further processed being transmitted, whilst, in order to recognise a bottle on its side or a damaged bottle in the bottle stream (1), the distance between the bottles (3) following one another and/or standing next to one another in the bottle stream (1) is measured, and the exceeding of a predetermined value for the distance between the bottles (3) is used as a criterion for recognising a bottle on its side and/or a damaged bottle (3c). <IMAGE>
