PURPOSE:To produce the title compound advantageously by dehydrogenation of 1phenyl-1-ethylphenyl-ethane using a specific dehydrogenation catalyst followed by hydroformylation of the reaction product using a transition metal carbonylation catalyst under specific conditions respectively. CONSTITUTION:i) The compound of formula I is allowed to come into contact with an iron oxide and/or chromium oxide dehydrogenation catalyst at 400-650 deg.C to give a dehydrogenation product containing at least the compound of formula II and the compound of formula III. Then, ii) the product is hydroformylated with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a transition metal carbonylation catalyst containing Pt, Rh, Ir, Ru, Co, Ni or the like, as an active metal, at 40-200 deg.C and a pressure over 5kg/cm<2> to give [(1 phenylethenyl] propionaldehyde which is useful as a medicine or an agrochemical, economically in high purity. |
