An apparatus and method for providing a metal-to-metal seal for a casing joint includes an instantaneous seal without the application of fluid pressure. The seal includes an outer tubular member (1) having an inner diameter, where a portion of the inner diameter includes a first sealing surface (16), and an inner tubular member (2) having an outer diameter disposed within the outer tubular member, where a portion of the outer diameter includes a second sealing surface (17). A self-energized seal (6,7,8,9) may be disposed around the inner tubular between the first sealing surface and the second sealing surface. The seal may include a first and a second substantially straight portion (22,23) and an arcuate portion (20,21) disposed therebetween forming a substantially U-shaped cross-section and at least two protrusions (5), one located on an outer surface of the self-energized seal and one located on an inner surface of the self-energized seal. |
