A method for controlling a lamp in a refrigerator is provided to use a light emitting diode as a lamp instead of an incandescent electric lamp to prevent a fire and an electric shock, and turn on and off a lamp automatically in accordance with opening time of a refrigerator door to prevent unnecessary power consumption and minimize rot of stored food. It is judged whether a refrigerator door is open. If the refrigerator door is open, a lamp of a refrigerator is turned on and a cooling fan is stopped, wherein the lamp is a light emitting diode. A control unit of the refrigerator checks door opening time. If the door opening time exceeds predetermined time, the lamp is forced to be turned off and the cooling fan is forced to operate.
