FIELD: production of inorganic compounds. SUBSTANCE: essentially anhydrous magnesium chloride containing less than 40 ppm calcium and less than 0.05 wt % magnesium oxide is prepared as follows: alcohol solution of magnesium chloride is dehydrated and introduced together with ammonia into reactor containing non-aqueous solution with less than 7 wt % ammonia to give precipitate containing magnesium chloride hexaammoniate. The same result is achieved when adding dehydrated ethylene glycol solution of magnesium chloride in into reactor containing ammonia-saturated ethylene glycol. Precipitate is washed and heated to give desired product that can be used in electrolysis-mediated magnesium metal production.
