PURPOSE: To obtain an infusible and hydrophilic fibrous material useful for battery separators, etc., by sulfonation treatment of a polyethylene-predominant synthetic: pulp under specified conditions. CONSTITUTION: A polyethylene-predominant synthetic pulp is subjected to sulfonation treatment at >=80 deg.C (pref. >=110 deg.C) in >=90wt.% concentrated sulfuric acid or fuming sulfuric acid followed by deacidification and drying, thus affording the objective fibrous material. It is preferable that >=2wt.% of oxygen be contained in this fibrous material.
