A power managing apparatus and a method are provided to control the performance and power consumption of a device according to the purpose of use by setting a power managing method. A power managing apparatus includes a power managing method setting unit(100), a storing unit(110), a power controlling unit(120), and a timer(130). The power managing method setting unit sets a power managing method by a user. The storing unit stores setting information from the power managing method setting unit and a plurality of power states defined by devices(300). The power controlling unit controls power output according to the set power managing method. The timer generates a signal periodically to convert the power controlling unit to the power state in accordance with the set power managing method.
