A thin metal or synthetic plastic expendible container is formed, by cupping apparatus, with a double thickness rim 10 at right-angles to the vertical axis of the container. A punch 1, Fig. 1, co-operates with inner and outer press members 2, 4 to form the container body 3 and an outwardly-extending single-ply flange 3a, respectively. A ring punch 5 then descends to fold flange 3a about the upper projecting part 4a of member 4; thereafter ring punch 5 descends further to force down the member 4 and a shoulder 6 above a recess in'the ring punch engages the projecting corner of the folded flange to bend the latter inwards as shown in Fig. 4. When the ring punch is retracted, member 4 is raised by springs 9 to compress the folded flange against punch 1 to form the double-ply rim as shown in Fig. 5. |
