Coke economy in blast furnaces

Blast furnace coke consumption is reduced by replacing all or part of the hot air blown through the tuyeres by a reducing gas, contg. principally CO and H2 derived from natural gas or hydrocarbons, mixed with varied amounts of O2. The mixed gas is partially combusted in an oxy-fuel burner, and regulation of the O2 flow controls the flame temp. at the ends of the tuyeres. A secondary injection of hydrocarbons may be made at the 1000 degrees C furnace level.
