The largely single phase, oxidic high temp. superconductor is composed of Rare Earth elements, Alkaline Earth elements, Cu and O. Its general compsn. is pref. REMe2Cu3O7-x in which RE stands for Rare Earth element and Me for Alkaline Earth element. The crystal-form is perovskite. The material is obtd. by sintering the participant oxides under high pressure in a gas-tight container e.g. a capsule which is both chemically and physically sealed. The starting mixt. contains at least a peroxide of an Alkaline Earth element, pref. BaO2, which decomposes at high temp. In order to screen the material from the container and to provide thermodynamic equilibrium it is surrounded by a shielding layer of a similar phase. The material is cooled under pressure. The superconductor phase is pref. compacted by explosion.
