PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the exhaust gas characteristic from an internal combustion engine as a drive engine in a portable manual work machine. SOLUTION: The entrance 6 of an exhaust gas muffler 2 is hydraulically connected to an exhaust vent 29, and a partition wall 11 is mounted in the casing 3 of the exhaust gas muffler 2. The partition wall 11 divides the exhaust gas muffler 2 into a fist space 12 adjacent to the exhaust vent 29 and a second space 13. The partition wall 11 has an opening part forming a hydraulically connecting part between the first space 12 and the second space 13. A catalyst 10 is mounted in the casing 3 of the exhaust gas muffler 2. In addition, a means 15 for temporarily accumulating exhaust gas 16 containing much oxygen is mounted in the casing to evenly distribute oxygen in the whole exhaust gas flow to energize the catalyst 10.
