New basic pyridone dis- to tetrakis-azo dyestuffs and their mixts. are claimed. In one of their tautomeric forms, these are of formula (I) where R1 = H, 1-4C alkyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl or phenyl-1-2 C-alkyl; R2 = H, CN, COOR5, -CONR6R7 or 1-pyridinium, opt. with 1-3 R8 substits.; R5 = H, 1-4C alkyl or phenyl-1-2 C-alkyl; R6 and R7 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R8 = 1-4C alkyl; R3 = 1-4C alkyl, opt. with one halogen, CN, OH or phenyl substit.; R4 = H or as R3; A = 2-6C alkylene or 3-6C hydroxyalkylene; E = a divalent bridging gp., attached via an aliphatic C atom on both sides; D = a diazo component of the benzene, azobenzene or naphthalene series and may contain one SO3H, COOH or SO2NH2 gp. to impart solubility in water; An(-) = a non-chromophoric anion; n = the no. of negative charges needed for compensation of the positive charges present in the mol. and not compensated by any anionic gps. present in D. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in storage-stable liquid aq. dyestuff prepns.; solid granulated dyestuff prepns.; and for dyeing or printing organic substrates contg. OH gps. or N, esp. leather or natural or regenerated cellulose fibre materials, partic. paper or paper prods., bast fibres or textile of or contg. cotton. (I) have good solubility, esp. in cold water, and high substantivity. They can be added to paper pulp in powder form, without reducing the brilliance or dyeing yield. The dyeing is level and has good fastness to migration, water and various solvents and chemicals. Paper dyed with (I) can be bleached by oxidn. or redn., which facilitates recycling.
