The arm shaft (5), located in the sewing-machine arm (4), of the zigzag-stitch sewing machine carries on one of its ends a crank (26). The arm shaft (5) is driven in such a direction that it rotates in the clockwise direction, as seen in the direction of the shaft end carrying the crank (26). As a result of the rotational movement of the arm shaft (5), the needle bar (19) is driven in such a way that it executes, on the one hand, an up-and-down movement and, on the other hand, a sideways movement to the left and right in a plane extending perpendicularly to the axis of the arm shaft (5). The gripper shaft or bed shaft (39) is arranged rotatably in the sewing-machine bed (2) in such a way that it extends parallel to the arm shaft (5). However, in respect of the path of to-and-fro movement of the needle (21), the arm shaft (5) and the bed shaft (39) run away from one another in mutually opposite directions. The loop gripper (41), with the nose grasping the loop, rotates synchronously with the arm shaft (5), but in the opposite direction. The nose of the loop gripper (41) is arranged, in respect of the path of to-and-fro movement of the needle (21), on the side opposite the direction of extension of the bed shaft (39). <IMAGE>
