PURPOSE:To effectively recover the adsorption performance of used activated carbon by using the activated carbon adsorbed with organic chlorine compds. as an electrode and electrochemically treating the activated carbon in water. CONSTITUTION:Fibrous activated carbon already used is dipped by about 0.1g in 50ml of purified water containing about 50mg of potassium nitrate as an electrolyte. This activated carbon contains trichloroethylene adsorbed thereto by about 1.4g per 1g of the activated carbon (the iodine adsorption performance of the activated carbon before use and after use is 1,500mg/g and 130mg/g, respectively). The activated carbon is used as a cathode and a stainless steel sheet is used as an anode (about 2cm<2> electrode area), on which 12V DC voltage is applied. This produces chloride ions in water by the reduction of chlorine in trichloroethylene carried out on the cathode. After two hours of applying the electric current, the activated carbon as the cathode is taken out. The iodine adsorption performance thereof is 650mg/g, which means 43% recovery rate compared to the original value.
|
