Described is a demand pacemaker with a hysteresis function, the pacemaker having a pulse generator (104) designed to generate stimulation pulses spaced a first interval of time apart, a sensor (105) designed to sense heart-action potentials and to determine heart actions from them, and a control unit (102) which is connected on the input side to the sensor (105) and on the output side to the pulse generator (104), the control unit including: (a) a discriminator (102.3) designed to discriminate between stimulated and natural heart actions and (b) an inhibitory control unit designed to inhibit the pulse generator for a predetermined length of time after a natural heart action has been sensed. The first time interval is shorter than the second time interval, and the inhibitory control unit has a programme control unit (102A) which is designed in such a way that, after a natural heart action has been detected, it triggers at least two sequences, each of a predetermined number of second time intervals, in which it does not give clearance for the generation of a stimulation pulse until after completion of the second time interval, a predetermined number of stimulation pulses being produced at the first interval between these two sequences.
