PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for generating singlet oxygen in which a singlet oxygen generator itself has little absorption in the visible region and the degree of fading (fading property) of a dye can be easily and accurately followed up and to provide a method for detecting singlet oxygen in which a singlet oxygen detector is easy to handle and singlet oxygen can be detected with high sensitivity and high accuracy. SOLUTION: In the method for generating singlet oxygen, a compound of formula (1) (where X<1> to X<3> are each an atomic group required to form a 5-membered aromatic heterocycle; Y is hydroxy, amino, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy or aryloxy; and L is a substituent).
