<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retractable writing utensil which can avoid the marring of the appearance of the front end part of a barrel even when a coiled spring is housed in the front end part of the transparent barrel. <P>SOLUTION: A refill 5 is housed within the barrel 2. The pen point 51 of the refill 5 is so constituted as to be retractably extended ahead from the front end of the barrel 2. Within the pointed front end part 21 of the barrel 2, a coiled spring 4 always energizing the refill 5 backwards is housed. The pointed front end part 21 of the barrel 2 is made of transparent or semitransparent material. A plurality of grooves 3 are visibly provided on the outer peripheral surface of the pointed front end part 21 of the barrel 2.
