The scale is given an offset zero relative to the mechanical zero position, by applying a fixed electrostatic field to the pointed electrode from an electret fixed to the case of the pocket dosimeter. The field is sufficient to deflect the pointer approx. to the end of the square low part of the scale so that in use it runs only over the linear portion.
