4- and 5-Aminoindanes are prepd. in isomeric mixture by nitration of indane and catalytic redn. to the amines. The 5-isomer is then separated as the succinate from MeOH soln. by addn. of succinic acid. The crystals are filtered off and the residual liquor is evaporated to recover the 4-isomer. The cpds. are drug intermediates.
