The invention relates to cationic layer compounds which can be obtained by subjecting layer compounds of general formula (I) [EeZzDdVv(OH<->)x](A<n->)a.qH2O, wherein E is a monovalent cation from the group of the alkaline metals, e is a number from 0 to 2, Z is a bivalent metal cation, z is a number from 0 to 6, D is a trivalent metal cation, d is a number from 0 to 3, V is a tetravalent metal cation, v is a number from 0 to 1, (A<n->) is an acid anion of charge n-, n being a whole number from 1 to 3, and q is a number from 1 to 10, with the condition that x > a and e + 2z + 3d + 4v = x + na; to crystallisation (i) and re-treating the material obtained (ii). The re-treatment consists of steam-drying at temperatures of 200 to 260 DEG C and lasts for 3 to 6 hours. The steam should be applied either directly or in the form of an inert carrier gas and should be guided continuously over the material to be dried in a quantity of 0.001 to 10 mol. water per hour and kilogram of the crystalline layer lattice compound obtained in stage (i). The inventive compounds are particularly suitable for stabilising halogen-containing plastics against thermal or photochemical decomposition and can therefore be used as stabilisers for the same.
