PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cleaning device capable of preventing an image carrier from being damaged so that its abrasion loss may be decreased and suitably removing even an adhesive matter to the surface of the image carrier by setting abutting width obtained when a cleaning blade abuts on the image carrier to a specified value. SOLUTION: The elastic cleaning blade 3 whose one end is attached to a casing 2 through a supporting member 5 is disposed at an aperture part formed on the image carrier 1 side of the casing 2, and either edge of the other end of the blade 3 abuts on the surface of the image carrier 1. In such an abutting state, the thickness and the free length of the blade 3 are set and the intrusion amount and the abutting angle of the blade 3 are adjusted so that the abutting width may be 50 to 100μm on the abutting edge side of the blade 3 on the image carrier 1. Thus, the abrasion loss is decreased, so that the life of the cleaning device is prolonged and a good-quality image is always stably obtained.
