An over-the-wire balloon dilatation catheter (20) of the short guide wire lumen type has a stainless steel hypotube (22) catheter shaft section, a distal plastic shaft section (23, 24) attached to the hypotube (22) and a balloon (26) connected to the distal plastic shaft section (23, 24). A relatively short guide wire lumen (52) extends throughout the length of the balloon (26).
