The stepping motor has a clamping device that comes into operation when the drive windings are disconnected and clamps the rotor in a given position. The clamping device generates an axial force to tilt the rotor such that the teeth of the rotor partly engage the teeth of the stator. The clamping device uses an electromagnet to generate the axial force. This force may be supplemented by a spring and by exciting adjacent stator windings.
