PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which productivity and reliability can be enhanced by detecting removal of an ink cartridge during print operation and performing stop operation by judging the residual quantity of ink. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus performing printing by supplying ink from a removable ink cartridge to a subtank mounted on a print head and performing main scanning of the print head and subscanning of a recording medium comprises a means for detecting mounting/demounting of the ink cartridge, a means for detecting the residual quantity of ink in the subtank, and a means for judging whether the residual quantity of ink exceeds a specified quantity (residual quantity requiring ink supply from the ink cartridge or no residual quantity of ink in the subtank) or not. When falling state of the ink cartridge is detected and the judging means judges that the residual quantity of ink exceeds the specified quantity, printing is stopped. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
