A process for preparing an aryl-β-diketone of the formula wherein R<1> is hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 haloalkyl, halogen, nitro or C2-C4 alkenyl; R<2> is C1-C6 alkyl, C3-C6 cycloalkyl or C1-C6 alkoxy; X<1> is hydrogen, halogen, C1-C6 alkyl or C1-C6 haloalkyl; and Z is CH or N, comprising: reacting a compound of the formula wherein R<1> is hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 haloalkyl, halogen, nitro or C2-C4 alkenyl; R<2> is C1-C6 alkyl, C3-C6 cycloalkyl or C1-C6 alkoxy; X<1> is hydrogen, halogen, C1-C6 alkyl or C1-C6 haloalkyl; R<3> is allyl or substituted allyl; and Z is CH or N, with a reducing agent in presence of palladium catalyst. 2. A process according to Claim 1, wherein the reducing agent is selected from the group consisting hydrogen gas, tributyltin hydride, sodium borohydride and soluble salts of formic acid. 3. A process according to Claim 1, wherein R<1> is C1-C6 haloalkyl; R<2> is methyl, isopropyl or cyclopropyl; R<3> is allyl or substituted allyl; and Z is CH. 4. A compound of the formula wherein R<1> is C1-C6 haloalkyl, R<2> is cyclopropyl; X<1> is hydrogen, halogen, C1-C6 alkyl or C1-C6 haloalkyl; and Z is CH or N, provided that if Z is CH then R<1> can not be trifluoromethyl. 6. A compound of the formula wherein R<1> is hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 haloalkyl, halogen, nitro or C2-C4 alkenyl; R<2> is C1-C6 alkyl, C3-C6 cycloalkyl or C1-C6 alkoxy; X<1> is hydrogen, halogen, C1-C6 alkyl or C1-C6 haloalkyl; R<3> is allyl or substituted allyl; and Z is CH or N.
