The vehicle seat comprises a seat element (2), especially equipped with a pressure-sensitive seat occupation sensor (7), and a back rest element (3) which is adjustable between a back rest position and a planar position, resting on the seat element. A back rest position sensor (3,9,10) recognizes, whether the element is in the planar position, and outputs a corresponding information. A passenger retention system receives preferably the back rest position information, and is deactivated accordingly.
