A backlight for an LCD is provided to pile glass substrates respectively having green, red, and blue fluorescent layers so that the green, red, and blue fluorescent layers are patterned in one dot, and to drive the glass substrates in a field sequential type so as to improve the color purity. A backlight comprises a lower glass substrate(120) having a first discharge electrode(122), a first glass substrate(130) having a blue fluorescent layer(134) formed on a lower surface thereof and a second discharge electrode(132) formed on an upper surface thereof, a second glass substrate(140) having a red fluorescent layer(144) formed on a lower surface thereof and a third discharge electrode(142) formed on an upper surface thereof, and a third glass substrate(150) having a green fluorescent layer(154) formed on a lower surface thereof and a third discharge electrode formed on an upper surface thereof. The first glass substrate is bonded to the lower glass substrate by a sealant to form a first discharge space(138), the second glass substrate is bonded to the first glass substrate by a sealant to form a second discharge space(148), and the second glass substrate is bonded to the third glass substrate by a sealant to form a third discharge space. The blue, red, and green fluorescent layers are patterned in one dot. The discharge spaces are filled with discharge gas. Electric powers are sequentially applied to the first, second, and third discharge electrodes to display colors including combination of blue, red, and green lights. |
