PURPOSE:To obtain the aluminum oxide sintered compact superior in mechanical strength and wear resistance by firing a mixed powder of alpha-Al2O3 incorporating silicon carbide and tungsten in the nonoxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:The powder of the blended composition in which the silicon carbide is incorporated 5-40%, by mol base, the tungsten is 0.5-25%, and an alpha-Al2O3 source is the balance in the terms of alpha-Al2O3 and the ratio of tungsten/ silicon carbide is <=4, is mixed. Next the objected aluminum oxide sintered compact is obtained by firing the mixture at 1500-1900 deg.C in the nonoxidizing atmosphere. The sintered compact has a 5-40% silicon compound, by mol base, and a 0.5-25% tungsten compound which are respectively expressed in the terms of SiC and metallic W and the tungsten/silicon carbide is <=4 in the mol ratio, and tungsten carbide particles <=0.5mu in the average particle size or tungsten silicide particles are dispersed in the crystal phase of the Al oxide sintered compact. |
