PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polarization element which can be made flat and thin using a simple structure and which can improve the reflection luminance of a reflection-type liquid crystal display and make the liquid crystal display bright. SOLUTION: In the polarization element, which scatters one of linearly polarized light components perpendicular to each other and substantially transmits the other, the optical anisotropic phase is aligned obliquely and uniaxially, while the azimuth from the transmission axis is kept perpendicular to the transmission axis, so as to change the polarization state of the scattered light. |
