PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stable operation method of a coke oven without extrusion clogging by the use of the result of the measurement of a coke cake width that is precisely measured on an end of carbonization. SOLUTION: (1) The coke cake width is so measured that a rigid frame in which an oven inside of an extrusion face and an oven inside of a bottom face of the test coke oven are each covered with a rigid frame extrusion face and a rigid frame bottom face is loaded previously into a test coke oven, coal is loaded in the rigid frame, after carbonization the rigid frame extrusion face is pushed toward an exhaust side of the test coke oven to extrude the coke cake and the cake width is measured. (2) The operation method of the coke oven comprises adjusting a coal formulation ratio and/or an operation condition so that extrusion current is not larger than a prescribed current value based on the relation of a gap level between the resultant coke cake width from the measuring method described in (1) and a oven wall, and the maximun extrusion current value in the real coke oven.
