PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To isolate a new 5-substituted hydantoinracemase having a high optimum temperature in a racemization reaction of the 5-substituted hydantoin, and provide a method for producing an optically active amino acid by using the enzyme. SOLUTION: This 5-substituted hydantoinracemase is a protein having either one of amino acid sequences of (a) or (b), and having the 5-substituted hydantoinracemase activity. (a) An amino acid sequence derived from Mycobacterium liquefaciens. (b) An amino acid sequence obtained by substituting, deleting, inserting, adding or reversing one or several amino acid residues in the above amino acid sequence.
