In order to regulate the cooling capacity of the refrigeration system of an air conditioning system of a motor vehicle it is provided for a bypass, which diverts gaseous refrigerant and contains a control valve, to be guided from the compression side of a compressor to its suction side. The control valve is connected in a compound circuit with a throttle element disposed downstream of the condenser in such a manner that it clears the bypass in inverse proportion to the set cooling capacity, that is to say closes the bypass when maximum cooling capacity is required and opens the bypass when a low cooling capacity is required. During operation of the refrigeration system, the compressor is driven constantly.
