The method involves using a combustion engine which drives a fuel pump over a drive element, recording at least one value which indicates the number of revolutions of the combustion engine, and evaluating the rise of the number of revolutions at the starting of the combustion engine, for the evaluation of the drive element. An error is preferably recognized, if the change of the number of revolutions is larger than a predetermined nominal point or threshold value, or if the number of revolutions rises within a predetermined time above a nominal point or threshold value.
