An aeration element consists of a base which is connected to an air supply, a membrane which covers the base, and means for sealing the membrane to the base and the base to the air supply pipe. The base is a rectangular plate with stiffening ridges at equal distances from its edges. The membrane is held by a surrounding frame, and the base plate has a sleeve which extends towards the air supply pipe and has centring rim. This sleeve projects into an air inlet of the pipe and carries a sealing ring which seals between the base plate, the air pipe and the frame. The frame is divided perpendicular to its longitudinal axis and each section has flanges which are connected by bolts to each other and to the air supply pipe. The frame closely surrounds the base plate at its edges where it has C- or L-shaped profile, and the membrane has a thickened edge section in this area. The clearance between the base plate and the edges of the frame is greater than the thickness of the membrane, but less than the thickness of the membrane's thickened edge section. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for introducing gas into aq. suspensions, and esp. for aerating waste water. The oxygen transfer, the air distribution and the performance during switching on and off are improved, while at the same time the pressure drop and the tendency to blockage are reduced
