Automotive exhaust sensor linked to air-fuel mixture supply minimizing unwanted exhaust emission in cold and hot start. A process and assembly determine whether a broad-band air-fuel mixture ratio sensor forming part of an automotive piston engine, is active or not. The system calculates the heat transferred to the sensor, using an initial value which is changed in response to the exhaust oxygen concentration. the concentration varies in response to the air-fuel mixture ratio. The process estimates the time taken, from the point of initial motor activation to activation of the air-fuel mixture sensor using the calculated heat transfer. The system further determines that the air-fuel sensor has been activated, after the estimated activation time has elapsed.
