The present invention relates to a process for the oxidation of alcohol and/or aldehyde groups with a peroxo com-pound in the presence of a heterogeneous rhenium based catalyst, and a co-catalyst. The process of the invention may, for exam-ple, be applied to the manufacture of maleic acid which can be dehydrated to lead to maleic anhydride.
