A control unit is provided for the bending operation, while the protractor (6) is connected to the unit and is movable in relation to the bending mechanism and in the lengthwise direction of the latter. Seen in the lengthwise direction of the mechanism (1-3), the protractor is outside the vertical projection of the work during the bending operation. The protractor can be arranged to project a line of light onto the work surface at right angles to the mechanism. The line of light is emitted at an angle to the vertical, being detected at the same angle by a receiver. A common housing can be provided for the light and receiver, and which slides along a bottom beam.
